I’ve been a fan of the Final Fantasy series since the days of PlayStation 1. So when I was given the chance to get some hands on time with the new Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, I jumped at the opportunity.
A direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII-2, the player takes control of Lightning who awakes from her self-imposed hibernation 13 days before the world is destined to end for good.
Gameplay has been highly revamped and feels somewhat more “action adventure” oriented than the usual turn based RPG that the Final Fantasy series is known for. A lot of Final Fantasy enthusiasts may balk at the idea but in practice it actually works.
Using a hybrid Paradigm system the player switches between three different combat stances, each with their own abilities. Similar to the previous two titles, enemies can be staggered when hit with the right moves, which allows players to strike with greater effectiveness.
The graphics are very well done, which is par for the course with any Final Fantasy title but still awesome to see nonetheless. Overall I was highly impressed which is a good thing as I was initially quite skeptical about the action orientated combat system.
All in all I had an absolute blast and would highly recommend it to both long time Final Fantasy fans as well as people that are new to the series.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII releases on 11 February 2013.
