rAge 2013: Dark Souls 2 Hands-on

I just had an awesome experience trying out Dark Souls 2 at the Megarom stand here at  rAge 2013.

One thing I loved about the original Dark Souls was the responsiveness of the controls and I’m happy to announce that has not changed. Any time you die it is inevitably because you as the player have made an error and though some deaths may seem cheap, they’re all avoidable.

Each fight is a challenge and I learned the hard way the penalty for getting too comfortable in my abilities. Even the basic enemies are able to kill even the toughest characters if the player doesn’t pay attention. One thing I did appreciate is the player is given more survivability options. In addition to your basic Estus Flasks (which now take slightly longer to use) the player is also given Life Gems of varying sizes. Life Gems are a heal over time item which makes their use more tactical than your average Estus Flask.

A greater attention to detail, more options and features and a more flexible combat system are just some of the improvements in Dark Souls 2. The game is fun, the game is immersive, the game is difficult (like REALLY difficult) and it most definitely gets my thumbs up!

No release date has been announced yet but we will update you as one becomes available. Check it out when you can but beware, it’s not for the faint of heart…
