It’s the 28th of September and one of the most anticipated games of the year; well, for soccer fans anyway has been released. That’s right, FIFA 13 has finally arrived and to celebrate this release, the guys from MWEB GameZone have decided to throw a launch event for all the fans in Cape Town. Not only that, but the event also serves as the final round of the King of Footie tournament which had qualifying legs at Musica stores in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town.
After arriving at the venue, attendees were greeted with a goodie bag filled with some awesome stuff. Shortly after everyone had arrived and signed in, we were ushered into the M-Cave. As attendees walked through the doors, FIFA 13 could be seen running on PC’s, PS3’s and Xbox 360’s all around the room. The guests wasted no time in getting comfortable and picking up a controller.
Not long after everyone had entered, Desmond Kurz welcomed the attendees to MWEB’s humble abode and also informed them of the proceedings for the evening. Shortly after the formalities, the attendees were let loose upon the food platters and the many consoles and PC’s. Also, what a spread: mini-boerewors rolls, prego rolls and grilled chicken were on the many platters littered around the room. If that wasn’t enough, a stack of pizzas arrived at around halftime.
Khama Billiat, Thato Mokeke and Paul Rusike from the football club, Ajax Cape Town, were also present at the event. Players were able to challenge them to a match of FIFA 13 and could win some awesome prizes provided that they scored the first goal in the match.
At the start of the night, the King of Footie tournament had 4 finalists from around the country. During the evening, they would play 12 matches in order to accumulate points: 2 points for a win and 0 for a loss. The 13th and final match between Irshaad Mahomed and Khalil Jiwan was an exciting one and everyone in attendance had their eyes glued to the screen. Ultimately, Irshaad Mahomed came out on top and was crowned the King of Footie. He walked away with a brand new Xbox 360 console plus a bundle of sports games including FIFA 13, courtesy of EA South Africa. However, Khalil Jiwan did not leave empty handed as he walked away with a copy of FIFA 13 on the platform of his choice.
As it got closer to Full Time, there were a lot more stragglers than usual as players wanted to get those last few matches in before hitting the road. As always, the event was a great success and actually seemed like there were a lot more people than usual. One can only hope that these launch parties continue to grow in the future. See you at the next event!
